What is an open rhinoplasty scar?

What is an open rhinoplasty scar

Open rhinoplasty refers to a surgical technique in which the incisions for accessing the nose are made externally, usually on the columella (the strip of tissue separating the nostrils). This approach provides more visibility and access to the underlying structures of the nose, allowing for greater control and precision in reshaping the nose. The scar resulting from an open rhinoplasty is usually located on the columella and can be visible post-surgery, although it typically fades over time.

Is open rhinoplasty better than closed?

An open rhinoplasty has several advantages. First, it allows for better visibility for your surgeon. They can see the tissue, bone, and cartilage, which helps them determine the best alterations. Incisions inside the nose can weaken the overall structure and compromise the shape of nose. An open rhinoplasty ensures the integrity and foundation of the nose structures remain solid so that the changes made during the procedure are permanent.

Does open rhinoplasty leave scars?

We mentioned that a small incision is needed to perform an open rhinoplasty. We often get asked if there will be an open rhinoplasty scar after treatment. The answer is yes, but those scars will be barely noticeable and dissipate with time. And remember, the incision is on the underside of the nose, which is already not visible to most people.

Your surgeon will give you instructions on adequately taking care of the incision site so that your open rhinoplasty scar stays minimal. First, you’ll need to keep the incision site clean. This reduces the risk of infection and aids in the healing process. Your surgeon may recommend applying an antibiotic ointment as well.

Second, you should follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding rest. Strenuous activities can disrupt healing and cause a more visible scar. Lastly, you will need to avoid the sun. Sun exposure causes scar tissue to darken, making it more noticeable. If you are in the sun, be sure to apply sunscreen to the incision site – and the rest of your skin, too!

How long does it take for an open rhinoplasty scar to heal?

Your surgeon will use a closing technique that minimizes scarring, but some healing time is required. If you follow all post-operative instructions, your open rhinoplasty scar will likely be completely gone in 3-6 months. During this time – but after the site has healed – you can use a light coating of makeup to hide the scar.

Dermabrasion nose scar after open rhinoplasty

Dermabrasion is an option that can remove more noticeable scars. After healing, the skin is smoother and uniform.

Dermabrasion treats several skin flaws, including age spots, wrinkles, acne scars, and scars from surgery.

The dermabrasion procedure is simple. First, your surgeon numbs the area with an anesthetic. Once the area is numb, the device passes over the skin. After the procedure, the skin will be sensitive and blotchy. This could last several weeks, and the skin will be completely healed in about three months.
