Gynecomastia Surgery in Miami
WHAT IS

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery is a cosmetic procedure designed to correct the appearance of enlarged breasts in men. Whether the condition presents on one or both breasts, gynecomastia is caused by an excess of fat tissue, skin, or glandular tissue. In cases of pseudo gynecomastia, where the excess is primarily due to fat, liposuction may be an effective alternative to surgery. If you’re struggling with this condition, consider speaking with a medical professional to learn more about your options for treatment.

Why Do People Get This Procedure?

Gynecomastia can occur at basically any age. Adolescent boys can develop it as a result of hormone changes in puberty, but the condition often resolves on its own in a few years – they rarely require surgical treatment. On the other hand, if gyno develops later in life, it’s usually permanent, and you can resolve it only with surgery. There are numerous diseases that can result in gynecomastia, but usually, sex hormone disbalances are at the root of the problem.

Regardless of the condition that caused the gyno, most patients decide that male breast reduction surgery is the best course of action. Gyno can significantly affect one’s quality of life. Not only does it alter your appearance, but it also affects your self-esteem. So, why struggle with that when you can fix the problem with a simple and safe surgical procedure? After your gyno surgery, you will feel more confident, the clothes will fit you better, and you won’t feel self-conscious whenever you decide to go to the beach. Gyno surgery will make your life better – you’ll hardly find a patient who regrets having the surgery.

How Common Is This Procedure?

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia is more common than most people think – it’s actually the most common male breast disorder. It affects 50-65% of men at some point in their life. Considering that obesity is a common health problem these days and that it can result in gyno, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Additionally, there is a great number of medications that have gyno on their list of side effects. Every year, more than 20,000 patients undergo gynecomastia surgery.

How Does the Procedure Go?

Gynecomastia surgery is performed on an outpatient basis with the use of general anesthesia to ensure a pain-free experience. Your surgeon may use liposuction or excision techniques, depending on the type of excess tissue present. Liposuction removes excess fat through small incisions and a suctioning hose, while excision involves removing glandular tissue or skin through larger incisions. Scars may result from excision, but skilled surgeons place incisions in concealed areas for minimal visibility. The placement and size of incisions are determined by the desired appearance and breast size.

PREPARING

How Can You Prepare for the Gynecomastia Surgery?

Before Your Gynecomastia Surgery:

  • Schedule a detailed medical evaluation and physical exam with your doctor
  • Discuss your medical history and any medications you are taking
  • Undergo screening for male breast cancer
  • Get additional tests to rule out other serious conditions
  • Quit smoking at least 2 weeks before the surgery
  • Stop taking blood thinners and any other medications as instructed by your doctor
  • Follow a healthy diet and stay hydrated
  • Get plenty of rest to help your body heal faster
  • Make arrangements for someone to drive you home after the surgery

By following these steps, you can help ensure a successful outcome and a smooth recovery from your gynecomastia surgery.

What Happens During the Brow Lift Procedure?

You will be given anesthetic before and throughout your brow lift treatment so that you do not experience any discomfort. You may receive either local anesthetic, which numbs the region of your head where your doctor will execute the treatment, or general anesthesia, which puts you to sleep. The kind of brow lift procedure you have will determine which type of anesthesia you’ll receive.

Your surgeon will make an incision in your epidermis at your hairline after the anesthesia begins to take effect. They will manipulate your tissues and remove sections of the underlying skin and muscles that are responsible for deep frown lines or wrinkles.

Your doctor will use stitches or staples to close the incisions after they have been made. They will safeguard your stitches by cushioning and bandaging the operated area. Surgery for a brow lift might take anywhere from one to three hours to complete.

RECOVERY

How Long Is the Recovery Process?

The recovery time after gynecomastia surgery varies from person to person and can depend on various factors, such as the extent of the procedure, the patient’s overall health, and the patient’s ability to follow postoperative instructions.

On average, patients can expect to take 1 to 2 weeks off from work or physical activity and can expect to see improvement in the shape and contour of their chest within several weeks. It’s important to follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding postoperative care, such as wearing a compression garment and avoiding heavy lifting, to ensure the best results and quickest recovery. It can take several months for the final results to become apparent and for any swelling to fully subside.

Tips for Recovery

  1. Take it easy: After the surgery, your body will need time to heal, so be sure to take it easy and avoid strenuous activities that could put stress on your chest.

  2. Wear a compression garment: Your surgeon will recommend that you wear a compression garment to help reduce swelling and support your chest as it heals.

  3. Follow medication instructions: You may be prescribed medication to help manage any pain or discomfort after the surgery. Make sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions for taking these medications.

  4. Avoid smoking: Smoking can slow down the healing process, so it’s important to avoid it altogether or at least limit your exposure.

  5. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help your body heal and reduce swelling.

  6. Keep incisions clean: To reduce the risk of infection, it’s important to keep the incisions clean and dry. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions on how to care for your incisions.

  7. Attend follow-up appointments: Your surgeon will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and address any concerns you may have. Be sure to attend all of these appointments to ensure the best possible outcome.

GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY IN MIAMI

Frequently asked questions

No, gynecomastia surgery is not considered a risky procedure. It’s known to be an incredibly safe one, with rare complications and a low number of risks associated with it. Still, every surgery comes with some possibility of post-op problems, and it’s important to get familiar with the list of complications that may occur before you consent to this surgery. The most important risks you should be aware of include: bleeding, anesthesia-related complications, and blood clots with deep vein thrombosis.

Gynecomastia can occur at essentially any age, and it’s well-known that it occurs in adolescent boys. However, surgical treatment isn’t recommended before turning 18 years old. The reason behind this is that the body continues to grow and develop until this age. Additionally, gyno in adolescents will often resolve on its own in a couple of years, so it makes sense to wait for surgery to see if it will even be necessary. If gynecomastia occurs in adults, the chances are that it will remain permanently, and that’s when most doctors will recommend surgery.

Gynecomastia surgery, otherwise known as male breast reduction surgery, brings permanent results. The glandular tissue that’s removed during this procedure can’t grow back. Still, the same can’t be said for the fat tissue deposits – if a patient leads an unhealthy lifestyle in years following the surgery and gains a lot of weight, some of that weight will certainly be located in the chest area. Apart from eating a great amount of fattening food, some recreational substances and anabolic steroids can also compromise the results of male breast reduction surgery, so they should be avoided.

What surgical technique will be used for gynecomastia surgery depends on the characteristics of a patient’s case – more precisely, the type of excess tissue that has resulted in gynecomastia. If the excess tissue is fat tissue (this condition is more precisely called pseudogynecomastia), the technique of choice is liposuction (suctioning the fat deposits through the suctioning hose). If the glandular tissue or skin is causing the problem, the surgeon will opt for an excision technique (removing the excess tissue with larger incisions).

Gyno surgery is performed under general anesthesia, which means that it isn’t painful at all. Still, once the patient wakes up and the effects of anesthetics wear off, they will start experiencing certain levels of pain in the first few weeks post-op. Soreness and tightness can be present for up to four weeks after surgery. Thankfully, the pain can be easily managed with certain pain medications, which will be prescribed by the doctor before the surgery.

The recovery time for gynecomastia surgery is one to two weeks. During this period, patients should rest and relax without any demanding physical activity. Still, walking is recommended and will actually help with your recovery. You will have to wear a compression vest to prevent skin retraction and fluid accumulation. There will be some pain, swelling, soreness, and bruising in the first few weeks after surgery, but this is all normal. Be sure to stick to your doctor’s post-op instructions if you want to ensure your recovery is smooth and effortless.
