BBL Recovery Tips

Going through any type of cosmetic surgery can be an ordeal. You have to deal with anesthesia, incisions, pain and discomfort, handling incision care, dressings, and bandages. Then your recovery begins at home. Recovery itself can be difficult when you don’t have proper planning beforehand.

Immediately After BBL

The moment your procedure ends, your recovery begins. But before undergoing a BBL, you’ll need to enlist someone to assist you for the first few days. This could be a trusted friend or family member who can drive you home and help you around the house. As soon as your anesthesia wears off, you’re going to be experiencing some swelling, soreness, and bruising. Take your pain medication as directed by your plastic surgeon, as well as any antibiotics that were prescribed.

You’ll be hearing a lot about limiting your physical activity and avoiding sitting down. However, you will still need to do some light walking in the early stages of your recovery to prevent blood clots and promote healthy blood circulation. Avoid strenuous physical activities, but keep taking those short walks. Continue to avoid sitting with your special pillow.

Weeks Four and Five

At this point in your recovery, you may start taking longer walks and resuming light physical exercise. Continue to avoid lifting heavyweights. You may experience some lingering tenderness or pain.

Week Six

You should no longer feel any soreness or discomfort by this time. If given the green light by your plastic surgeon, you can resume lower body exercises. You can also spend more time outdoors, such as at the beach, as long as you aren’t swimming or overdoing it physically. You’ll also be happy to know that you can finally begin seeing the results of your BBL procedure.

Wear Your Compression Garment

Immediately after your BBL, you’ll be wearing a compression garment. This is recommended because it helps your body minimize swelling at the liposuction site. You probably only need to wear it for a few days.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Eating nutritious food can go a long way in helping you recover from your procedure. Not only will it help stabilize your weight, but certain foods have properties that promote healing and reduce inflammation. Be sure to eat plenty of meals that incorporate the following:

  • Fruits: Eating fresh pineapple is particularly helpful since enzymes reduce inflammation and swelling.
  • Fresh fish
  • Avocado
  • Vegetables
  • Lean protein sources like salmon and chicken
  • Leafy greens like kale and spinach

Another thing to keep in mind is that you need to drink plenty of water and fluids to remain hydrated. Anytime you are healing from surgery, your body will have a higher demand for water to deliver nutrients and flush out toxins.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration is critical for recovery after liposuction. Drink eight glasses of water per day, but make sure to drink more than that if you have had surgery – about 10-12 glasses will be necessary because it helps flush out toxins from the body and keep them hydrated too! Other options include diluted fruit juice or low-calorie drinks like skim milk

Take It Slow

When returning to normal physical activity, take things slowly at first. Transition gradually into your routine. And listen to what your body tells you at all times. If you start getting sore again, or any of your recoveries experience a setback, ease off. If things don’t improve after you back away, contact your plastic surgeon.

Fat Survival

Not all of the fat transferred into your buttocks will survive over the long haul. The amount that stays depends on surgical technique and how you are progressing in your recovery. Usually, anywhere between 50% and 80% of the transferred fat will survive over the long term.

To ensure that as much as possible of the transferred fat survives, follow all of your surgeon’s recommendations carefully. This will give you the best chance of obtaining a favorable outcome.

Post surgical massage

Therapeutic massage can be beneficial in promoting healthy blood circulation in specific areas, which could help speed up your recovery.

When it comes to your BBL procedure, you should ask your surgeon for their recommendation about massages. Individual surgeons have different ideas about the benefits of massage, and some recommend that their patients undergo lymphatic massage to promote healing and improve skin appearance.

Attend Follow-Up Appointments

Finally, although your plastic surgeon already did most of their work by performing your BBL procedure, they are still available to answer any questions that you may have.
